Happy Independence Day

Late.

The Fourth went off with a bang around here. We had a BBQ. What else should we do? Everyone wore patriotic colors because if we are anything at all, it is patriotic. We celebrated it in a truly American fashion with an abundance of food, and drink of the non-alcoholic variety. Hubby had a 6 pack of beer, but other than that everyone was happy with soda, water, or tea.

Of course people who don't have freedom would have seen our display of food as decadent and over indulgent, but I saw it as nothing more than a result of the wonderful bounty that freedom has brought to this country. It was nothing more than patriotic.

We shot off firecrackers in the driveway the way all good Americans should, and our neighbors did the same. No one around here whined about whether they were legal or illegal, it didn't matter, they were pretty and went boom. The neighborhood was cracking until well past 11:00 PM, and no one seemed the least bit bothered by it. Although, I would have stopped at 10:00 out of politeness for the neighbors. We were done by 9:30 anyway.

The rest of the lemmings in town probably went to the government sanctioned fire works displays, which are always nice, but the idea of independence sort of takes a back seat when the gov. tells you that you can't burn a friggin sparkler in your own darn driveway. I was glad to see that there is still at least a hint of rebel colonists in some of us.

It just takes common sense here people. Something those city council members who outlawed firecrackers seem to think us dumb hooligans have none of. Common sense says, don't let your kids shoot them off without your supervision, someone over the age of say 16 should be lighting them, don't point them at other people, and for goodness sakes be responsible with the mini explosive devices. Don't start any fires. What is so hard about that?

Goodness it is a wonder that we are allowed to even have backyard grills anymore. Every time I heard a firecracker last night it made my little shriveled heart sing, at least fireworks are legal where we live. We don't have a city council, and I'm glad about that.
